Epoch Biodesign
Epoch Biodesign is a well-funded, venture-backed start-up using biology to make every type of plastic recyclable - starting with Nylon.
Using a unique combination of AI, synthetic biology and green chemistry, we are scaling enzymatic recycling processes that transform unrecyclable plastics into new, virgin-quality materials. These processes yield substantial reductions in carbon emissions and prevent waste from entering landfill or the environment. They also generate disruptive unit economics, allowing us to scale our solutions quickly to solve this urgent challenge.
With our pilot plant already processing Nylon 6,6 waste at the multi-tonne level, we will imminently complete construction on our larger demo facility. This will produce material that will be used in garments for some of the world’s biggest brands, and also in components for some of the world’s largest car companies.
The Role
We are seeking a hands-on Analytical Senior Scientist to provide analytical expertise across method development, GC instrumentation, and day-to-day analytical support. This role includes preparing certificates of analysis for finished products and serving as a key contributor to the analytical strategy supporting plastic depolymerisation research. You will play a central role in enabling robust process development through high-quality analytical science.
As Analytical Senior Scientist at Epoch your core functions will be:
Analytical Development
Provide scientific leadership as a subject matter expert in analytical chemistry, supporting R&D process development and related technical activities
Oversee the operation, maintenance, and performance of GC-FID and GC-MS systems to ensure reliable purity analysis and impurity identification
Troubleshoot and resolve issues with GC-FID/MS equipments
Design and develop new analytical methods to determine the molecular composition of incoming feedstock (i.e. waste plastics)
Characterise and quantify trace-level impurities in finished products
Expand external analytical capabilities by engaging with third-party laboratories, evaluating technical capabilities, and verifying data quality using blind standards for both routine and specialised analyses
Procure new analytical instruments, consumables, maintenance parts, and reference standards.
Monitor advances in analytical techniques and technologies to ensure the group remains at the forefront of analytical best practices
Communication and reporting
Maintain comprehensive records, including experimental data, observations, and outcomes, following documentation protocol
Author and update validated analytical methods SOPs
Prepare and deliver weekly project updates
Effectively communicate analytical results and implications to the research team and the commercial team
Maintain thorough and accurate documentation of experimental data, observations, band results in accordance with established protocols
Essential Qualifications:
Master’s or Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry or Organic Chemistry
Minimum of 5 years of industrial experience in an analytical laboratory, including method development and routine analysis
Proficiency in troubleshooting, repairing, and performing routine maintenance on GC- FID/MS
Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
Solid understanding of laboratory safety standards and best practices
Proficiency with standard IT software and GC analytical software
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Willingness to work in a hands-on, laboratory-based role
Desirable
Advanced degree in analytical or organic chemistry with substantial experience characterising complex mixtures across multiple analytical platforms
Working knowledge of HPLC, LC-MS, ICP, TOC, TN, and NMR
Experience performing analyte derivatisation for GC analysis
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, R&D-driven environment
