The Role
Overview
Carbon Direct is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Hybrid Decarbonization Scientist to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for supporting deep diligences and conducting scientific assessments of decarbonization technologies, strategies, and projects. You will play a critical role in ensuring the scientific rigor and integrity of our advisory services, working closely with clients to evaluate solutions that effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A significant part of this role involves translating deep expertise in Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), biomass with carbon removal and storage (BiCRS), and biochar projects into recommendations for a range of clients.
Responsibilities
- Support comprehensive scientific evaluations of hybrid decarbonization technologies and strategies, including BECCS, BiCRS, and biochar.
- Perform in-depth technical and operational due diligence on decarbonization projects and initiatives to assess feasibility, risks, and potential impact.
- Conduct life cycle assessments (LCAs) to evaluate the environmental performance and carbon accounting of decarbonization projects, ensuring methodological rigor and alignment with industry standards.
- Apply expertise in sustainable biomass sourcing principles and supply chain considerations to evaluate feedstock viability and environmental integrity for relevant projects.
- Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the latest advancements in climate science, technology, and policy relevant to decarbonization efforts.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineers, economists, and policy experts, to integrate scientific insights into client recommendations and strategies.
- Prepare detailed reports, presentations, and technical documents to communicate findings and recommendations to clients and stakeholders.
- Stay abreast of emerging trends and developments in the field of decarbonization, participating in conferences, workshops, and professional networks to continuously enhance expertise.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in conducting scientific research and assessments in the field of decarbonization, with a strong track record of published or disseminated work.
- Ph.D. or Master’s degree in a relevant field such as Environmental Science, Climate Science, Engineering, or a related discipline (not required, but nice to have).
- Extensive knowledge of decarbonization technologies and strategies, including their technical, economic, and environmental aspects.
- Ability to effectively interface with external clients and internal stakeholders, providing excellent, responsive service
- Specific expertise in BECCS and biochar projects, including their development, implementation, and assessment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to conduct rigorous technical and financial evaluations.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively convey complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Proficiency in relevant software and tools for data analysis, modeling, and simulation.
- Commitment to staying current with industry trends, scientific advancements, and best practices in decarbonization.
- Experience in consulting or advisory roles, particularly in the climate or environmental sectors.
- Project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
Salary Range
$133,000-$163,000 a year
