About the role

The Traveling Reactor Cooling Pump (RCP) Mechanic - Nuclear is responsible for inspecting, disassembling, repairing, reassembling, and testing reactor coolant pumps (RCPs) and other safety-related cooling system components during nuclear outages. This role requires strong mechanical expertise, attention to detail, and strict compliance with nuclear safety, quality assurance, and regulatory requirements.

PROJECT-BASED TRAVEL ROLE: This position is not based in Columbia, SC. We are collecting applications for professionals willing to travel to nuclear power plant sites nationwide as outage and project work becomes available. Work will take place at nuclear facilities across the United States as projects are awarded, and roles will be activated as project staffing needs are confirmed.

Responsibilities

  • Travel to nuclear power plants to support scheduled refueling and maintenance outages.
  • Disassemble, inspect, and rebuild reactor coolant pumps (RCPs) and associated cooling system components.
  • Measure, record, and verify critical tolerances, fits, and clearances during pump overhaul activities.
  • Install and align mechanical seals, bearings, shafts, and couplings according to technical specifications.
  • Perform precision shaft alignment and coupling installation to ensure proper pump operation.
  • Execute work in accordance with nuclear quality assurance procedures, outage work packages, and plant procedures.
  • Maintain strict Foreign Material Exclusion (FME) practices and contamination control requirements.
  • Support outage critical path schedules by completing assigned mechanical tasks efficiently and safely.
  • Document inspection findings, measurements, and work performed in accordance with site QA requirements.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and ensure proper care and maintenance of tools and equipment.

Experience / Required Qualifications

  • Journeyman Millwright or Industrial Mechanic certification preferred.
  • Experience performing maintenance, overhaul, and installation of large centrifugal pumps.
  • Demonstrated experience using precision measurement tools and performing laser alignment.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, technical manuals, and work packages.
  • Experience working in industrial or power generation environments.
  • Nuclear power plant or nuclear outage experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with nuclear quality assurance procedures, FME controls, and contamination control practices is a plus.
  • Ability to travel extensively and work extended hours during outage schedules
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety and quality standards.

Please Note:
This role focuses on reactor coolant pump (RCP) inspection and overhaul during nuclear outages and is not a general maintenance position. Applicants must have direct experience working on RCPs in nuclear outage environments.
